8 Men Out

Rugby last night attracted a record 8 guys! I was exhausted, true, but it was great to be able to run 4-a-side. Last night's run was the last for one of our core guys of the last 10 years - Robbie Butler is headed to the U of Manitoba this week for a one year teaching contract. He will definitely be missed. Alf was again out last night. He is so good it is actually scary. My injury of the night? In full flight Uncle Andy stepped on my ankle with his cleats... ARGH!

With so little sleep (the flight into TO was terrible) and running around after work, following our post-rugby drinks at the Duke it was all I could do not to fall asleep where I stood.

The Pocket PC Case Works!

I just accidentally dropped my oh-so-handy iPAQ down some stairs... this message is proof that the new metal case works!

[Added later in the Day] But the Sync cable was not so lucky - looks like it was broken either before I left for Calgary or yesterday. I have had to strip cover from the cable to get it to work. It's pretty dodgy so a new cable has been ordered.

Still Alive, Almost Kicking.

Alright, my Calgary weblog entries did abruptly end - a testament to the success of my efforts to enter a vacation frame of mind. (Definitely not sloth! no!)

Karina and I caught the red-eye back from AB early this morning an exthausting experience for certain and the reason why I will make a brief entry for today (I am SO tired).

The brief overview of the trip? A great success both as a vacation & business trip. And very wet. Many, many thanks to K for making it all happen - it was very special. The Icefields Parkway is absolutely amazing and we had many great hikes. More details will follow!

Some tyrants invade. Others are invited.

What value are you willing to place on your freedom of choice? Is having an easier life as a consumer really worth the lost of your rights as an individual? While nations fire Tomahawk missiles to gift freedom, citizens give away this gift so they can more quickly get their MickeyD's (sans pickle) ordered to catch Friends. Firewalls are designed to save you, use them and protect yourself.

Champions League Draw

Liverpool has drawn into what looks like a competitive but not impossible pool for the first round of the Champions League. LFC will be facing Spanish team Deportivo(who lost the La Liga title to Rafa's former club Valencia last year), Monaco and Olympikaos. Our "top class" opponent (draw from the top pool) being a Spanish club may prove a great advantage with RB's experience.

Calgary Report - Day 3

Sigh. The rain continues.

Today's meeting wasn't as successful as those of yesterday - it never really had the potential to be so, but all the same I wasn't too happy with how I handled it. With a positive frame of mind, it was a learning experience. I've been keeping in contact with Infoware via VPN, but still don't have much of a sense what's going on... and yet am still in a work frame of mind. I think starting tomorrow morning I'm going to have a final contact with the firm and then put myself in a vacation frame of mind. Think I'll seek out some (as of yet unfound) hip bistro and read my copy of Pico Iyer's "Video Nights in Kathmandu".

Karina and I have our reservations for the first few nights in Banff. I'm really looking forward to the trip - hopefully the weather will clear a little and we'll be able to get some long hikes in. The National Park staff is on strike so we may get into the park for free.

What's a day without Football News?

Sunday's match will be the first with new LFC signings Alonso and Garcia - I'm not sure how I'll manage to catch the match, but it would be nice to see nonetheless. One notable occurrence today in Premiership history - Arsenal's win today means that the club now has the longest undefeated record in English football - 43 games. Also, Everton is apparently looking to sell young sensation Wayne Rooney... for upwards of $50M!

Calgary Report - Day 2

Two hours ago I would have been telling you about how the sun came out in Calgary this afternoon and how I had a great walk around the city. I won't be telling about that now - a severe thunderstorm has covered the city and the rain in coming down in buckets.

My meetings today went very well. My morning presentation with a large Calgary corporate and litigation firm was favourably received - Infoware's "InCourt" product was very popularly received... I have strong hopes for this product in the coming months. My second meeting ran about 2 hours and I think will prove to be very important for Infoware both in developing our business in Western Canada and the support of litigators in general. So many possibilities for new business and products - very exciting. I was invited by the fellow I was meeting with to do some presentations in Edmonton tomorrow, but unfortunately already have a meeting for the afternoon. Guess I'll be coming out this way again in a few weeks!

Karina is out with the partner this evening so I am left to my own devices. Considering this storm (tornadoes expected too!) I think I may make my way down to the gym... maybe whatshername (the star of Felicity) will be there (as she's in the hotel).

UPDATE: the tornadoes cleared and the sun was out again just before nightfall.

Not a Happy Victory

Liverpool FC are through to the Champions League despite a poor performance today at Anfield.

Admittedly I missed the first half of the match due to a business meeting, but did catch the second and wasn't a big fan of what I saw. What's with Kewell these past few matches? Is anyone else getting a poor feeling about the coordination of the strikers? And what of the defence? I never thought I'd say this, but thank God for Carragher. Not a fun match to watch. I did like what I saw from Warnock today however. Here's hoping that Rafa along with new signings Gracia and Alonso can produce some better cohesion and control to the Liverpool line (Stevie G's going to be exhausted!)

Calgary Report - Day 1.

First off, let me say that the current weather in Calgary sucks - it's rainy and overcast and has been so since we arrived. Consequently, any negative comments on what has otherwise been a very relaxing trip out West should be blamed on the weather.

Temporary Home
The hotel where we're staying is almost right in the downtown core - the room looks out at the Saddledome and Calgary Tower. There is a large group of Japanese women staying in the Hotel - culturally it was a little odd to have the 6'+ doorman bowing to these ladies as they entered (we received no such acknowledgment). The continental breakfast is excellent and Karina has decided that she was right to not like oatmeal.

Path vs. the 15+
Visitors to Calgary or those who have seen the excellent Canadian indie flick "waydowntown" will know that Calgary has a network of covered bridges (15 feet above the sidewalk) connecting the buildings in the downtown core thereby making it possible to travel around the core without going outside. Toronto's PATH connecting the downtown is very much similar but connects below ground. So how do they compare? Both are very convenient for making your way around in inclement weather and locating places at which to purchase soy lattes. Both have a marvelous cold and corporate air about them that seems to reinforce the idea that this is not a place to lounge about. Both are mainly traveled by people in various stages of corporate undress. Both are very confusing to navigate. But the 15+ doesn't seem to have all that many people using it. In fact, there don't seem to be very many people around. Let's see what I have to say in a few days - for now I'm giving the 15+ top marks for letting the corporate drones get sunlight and the apparent lack of doors you have to open (stupid TD Center). There are, however, much fewer stores (and an abundance of card shops???)

I am shortly to head over to the Eau Claire Market - and will report back (when I please).

On the weekend.

My expectations of a frenetic few days preparing for this trip out West do not seem to have been warranted. Karina and I have been busy to be sure, but it wasn't the fiasco that I honestly had been expecting. We seem to have managed to bring everything we need and the travel parts of the trip have been very easy.

The Man City-Liverpool match on Saturday was a comforting victory although I hope not a sign of things to come. Unlike the Spurs match which saw the team have a great first half and a terrible second, this match was a terrible first half followed by a great second. Gerrard looked awesome throughout and Cisse's pace is very encouraging. Finnan mailed his game in: I would say that his Anfield term is numbered less than seven days. Harry Kewell's touches left a great deal to be desired as he seemed to have a mysterious tendency to loose the ball at the end of an excellent run. This is disconcerting given the number of times we ended up with the ball. I wasn't altogether thrilled by Baros' performance for although admittedly he was manhandled throughout the match, I don't think he reacted very well. Hardworking new signing Josemi went out with an injury in the second half and is doubtful for tomorrow's qualifier match. In a week's time I expect to see a very
different team hit the pitch as Alonso and Garcia are both to start for the club. Everything I am reading about Alonso is very exciting.

Saturday was a busy day for after the match I bladed out to Humberto's for a workout and then made my way back into the downtown core to put in a few hours at Infoware. A few hours turned out to be almost 5 as I still had much work to do to prepare for my Calgary meetings and to document my most recent business development activity. Friday night I had finished the day with several (undocumented) conference calls
meaning that I hadn't actually left our offices until after 8. We also reviewed sales to date and many of my early sales at Infoware have not paid up - the reasons for these "warranty claims" have been corrected in the current program, but it is very frustrating to me nonetheless... implementation seems to have been a major issue, but so has the "quality" of the clientele. I am not used to a situation where clients are not satisfied with work with which I am involved. My feeling is
that this experience is one common to being in sales... am I wrong? I wish that I could get hold of Chris the senior sales guy from Modrobes - I think his mentorship would be very useful. Think I'll email Gabe to see if she has his contact info.

Today is the Day before Tomorrow. (Yikes!)

BBC SPORT | Liverpool
Liverpool are continuing their acquisition of players as the season gets underway - although unlikely to start for tomorrow's Man City match, new Spaniards Alonso and Garcia are going through their medicals in prep to join the team. I have a LFC Toronto exec meeting tomorrow to review the Toronto tour, our finances and plans for the new season. I don't know what the executive makeup will be for '04-'05.

Karina and I caught the end two-thirds of Bend it like Beckham last night on cable. A really enjoyable film that I recommend strongly if you haven't seen it.

Preparations are really not started on my part for the trip out West - I haven't reviewed the laptop, put my materials together or confirmed meetings. Nor have I packed. Or read about what we're going to do. I'm not panicked, but there is enough to do for the next 48 hours! I have. however, obtained a list of the pubs in Calgary likely to be showing the Graz match on Tuesday.

I'm off to have lunch with the folks in an hour or so, so perhaps I should get a groove on.

Tom Waits Touring Again!

ANTI.COM | European Tour
I am one happy camper. It looks like Tom will be touring in support of his new album "Real Gone". Marc Ribot is playing on the tour and the album! Real Gone has been written and produced by Tom Waits and wife Kathleen Brennan, his longtime collaborator. The 15-track CD unveils Waits’ new musical hybrid, crafted from primal blues, Jamaican rock-steady grooves, African and Latin rhythms and melodies and what Waits calls “cubist funk”. No NA tour dates yet.

To those groaning as they read this - bite me.

In other ANTI news, indie folk-rock sex sensation (and fan of Oasis tapas) Neko Case is releasing her live Toronto show with the Sadies on the label.

Writing of her previous solo work, Spin Magazine’s Alex Pappademas said “...she treats Americana like a wellspring of weirdness, not a retro refuge...” and in Rolling Stone, Neva Chonin called her sound “…country so cool it shivers.”

Reds close on Alonso

BBC SPORT | Football | Liverpool | Reds close on Alonso
The 22-yo Xabi is almost officially a RED - his agent is speaking of Liverpool being the "only club in the race" (???) and his former club Real Sociedad has confirmed the move. German Hamann has been told that he is to remain at Anfield - good news I think! There is certainly a lot of depth developing in the midfield.

Tired or Wired?

Last night's rugby was a bit of disaster for our side - we came out strong but the boys got tired, then sloppy, then frustrated. My injury this week? A bad ankle - I tried a jump-catch-turn move without sufficient clearance and did a fair job of twisting it.

Work today was again mad with only some of my objectives for the day achieved. Phone calls, emails, conferences. I had to cancel on Humberto which isn't really a good idea... I need to get my exercise.

Preparations for Sunday's trip continues as I am attempting now to get business meetings at some of the downtown Calgary firms... the next few days will be crucial!

Andrew and Lynn and Graham are moving this weekend - A&L to their new house in Hamilton, G to digs in Ottawa. It's going to be busy with everyone clamouring about!

Think I'll go for a swim...

Mondays.

Egad, what a day.

The past few days began fairly nice weekend. Karina and I were able to head North to see my Aunt & Uncle off and to say a last goodbye to Neal before he headed back to school. I feel bad for not being able to spend more time with them on this brief visit. Heading back to Toronto Saturday, I had all too much work to do although I did manage to have dinner with Graham followed by a few Olympic watching beers with friends. Sunday was spent having excellent mid-day Dim Sum followed by the work that I had yet to do. In the end, it looks like my late-night work caused me to loose some focus - I saved some bad data overtop one of my models adding some more work to my plate.

Today was altogether a mad day. My morning meeting ran until 12:30 as I made calls to London and Washington. I still have a long list of people to call (now tomorrow) and a few new issues popped up. My Calgary trip has been moved to Sunday and the arrangements have been a terrible headache (and only partially for me!). I received notice today that one of my (I thought certain) big deals is not to close until the new year, meaning that my sales target is looking less healthy (as is my bank account). Yes, a frustrating day.

After a mad effort to get the channel through the Byzantine site that is Bell ExpressVu, I did finally get to watch Liverpool draw 1-1 with Spurs in the first game of the season. The team looked pretty good for the start of the match and then grew increasingly flat. I did not enjoy the second half which saw the Spurs dominate possession.

Olympics coverage in HDTV is amazing BTW. HDTV with NBC commentary sucks.

Rugby is tonight and I believe we will, in fact, have enough guys. The exercise, and the chance to take my mind off work and other things is very welcome.

Heading Home; Work to do.

A busy day today, so not much time to contribute to the blog. I'm installing software on the laptop right now giving me a few minutes reprieve. My projects are ploughing along, and I have much more to get done before the start of next week. Heading to the folks place this evening to spend some time with Uncle Rob and Aunt Barbara - hardly have seen them (or Neal) this week while they have been visiting. Karina and I are headed to Calgary next Wednesday night. The apartment upstairs has been rented to Amanda and Tad which should be fun. I'm not sure how I feel about Owen's departure - but there had better be FSW at home so I can watch tomorrow's game! Files copied... got to go.

Owen off to Madrid

The deal is more or less concluded. Liverpool will be getting Midfielder Antonio Nunez as part of the deal (so Finnan might be getting worried about his future). Owen is actually taking a pay cut to earn 80,000 Euros/week. An Anfield era ends? Guess I'd better get that Baros shirt made up as he and Stevie G have a lot of work to do.

Killing Time until Rugby

Today didn't come off quite as planned - I never got to work on the Civil Procedure models. I did renew a few languishing leads and make some new business contacts, so it was overall a positive day. The LX project quote eventually did get out the door - and was immediately followed by a request to add more to the project! The Danes got back to me just past five meaning that someone there was having a late night. I am working on having a ton of items to get out tomorrow.

Rugby is on for this evening and will be followed by drinks at Hart House. No news on the Owen front although a move is starting to look unlikely... if it does go ahead it won't be with the players Liverpool wanted as Morientes is ineligibe for Champions League play and Eto is headed to Barcelona. The LFC Toronto Site has been updated.

No demo; Rugby tonight.

On the work front today, my early morning demo with the Danes didn't happen - looks like I'll be following up with a new contact tomorrow. I still have to finish a Legal Extensions quote and make some serious ground on the Civil Procedure charts as well. Infoware's business leads activity coming off the web has dramatically increased this week!

Hopefully rugby is still a go for tonight - we have yet to confirm enough players (six). My workout last night with Humberto was cancelled so instead I bladed up to Karina's house and went for a swim. Turns out I can tread water for quite some time (I had to go back in after 20 minutes).

Owen on the Go? (Well not Yet)

For 10M? That's pretty cheap for a marquee player!
The Player swap plan has fallen through and Owen's growing absence from the LFC Official site is glaring. Real's Morientes is now Cup tied and Eto is convinced he's bound for Barcelona. News is expected in 48 hours.

Again! (And Again!)

There I am, having a brief conference about current projects with Hugh
when one of the next door architects pops his head around to say
"Hello". BAM! He starts talking about how handymen are getting all the
action at home! I can't believe this stupid story is still circulating!

The finger. The eye. The infection. Could there be a connection?
I love using DUNE quotes

Heading to Calgary.

Well it looks like Karina and I will be heading to Calgary mid- to late next week. Our plan is to head to Jasper and the mountains for a few days before returning to Calgary for the week. Karina is working at a client site so I will have the days to enjoy myself in the city - hopefully my iPod ships in time for the trip!

Humberto is on my mind today as he and I talked about his business woes last night during my training session. He's struggling with his training biz and figures he is six clients short of a good position. Don't know how I can help. He's not eating or sleeping well (if at all).

Owen Exiting the Club today?

Liverpool.TV Fuels Transfer Speculation
There is almost no mention of the Owen transfer talks on the Official Liverpool site which only adds to the mystery as to what is happening with the striker and Club. Owen did not play in yesterday's match which means he is still eligible to play in the Champions League for another club.

Liverpool had a convincing 2-0 win yesterday against GAK in Austria for their Champions League qualifier. Playing in the Champions League series will add mucho doneros to Club coffers. They still have another leg against GAK to be played at Anfield.

Happy Health News.

The Globe and Mail | Smoking among teens plummets
According to the 2003 Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey, Canada is home to 5.3 million smokers over the age of 15. At 30 per cent, the rate for young adults aged 20 to 24 is the highest for any group.

"Nineteen may be the new high-water mark," Mr. Thompson said. "Nobody starts to smoke past the age of 25, but addiction can begin [at any time]."

This is happy news. However it still does not move me to lift my Kraft Foods products ban!

LFC Squad Change - Murphy Gone?

MURPHY COMPLETES CHARLTON SWITCH
At some level I just can't believe that Murphy, one-time a darling of the LFC family, is now off to Charlton. Not the most consistent player in the last few years, but I thought he was looking pretty good in the pre-season matches. When is that Champions League roster deadline? Who is coming?

Pet Peeves - Lazy Reporting, Old News Boxes

This morning, two pet peeves from my trip into work.

First off, Why are reporters and the media so damn lazy? One of the major Toronto papers ran a very weak front page article (below the fold) about how home contractors are involved in extramartial affairs. But that wasn't the end of my exposure to this (highly anecdotal) article, later on I hear a reporter outside Union interviewing commuters - the question? "What about contractors do women find so appealling?" >sigh<

Second pet peeve - has anyone else noticed that since Toronto's newspaper war started a few years ago that the stocking of newspaper boxes is entirely inconsistent? As I bladed along the street this morning I saw the front pages of several different days!

Dad's Do a Good Night!

Last night's Birthday Dinner seems to have been a great success. Much fun was had by apparently all, no-one seemed to hurt themselves, the food (including my veg lasagna) all when down well and there was enough alcohol (or other) for everyone.

Oh Danny Boy, The Spurs, the Spurs are calling?

Rafa talks - Murphy and Finnan going?
One-time fan-darlign Danny Murphy may be soon headed out of Anfield - Benitez has told him he is not likely to play much this season. Steve Finnan (unsurprisingly) is also talking to other teams. Who's playing against GAK tomorrow? Our team is still forming!

CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - Hockey NHL - Toronto: Leafs all tapped out?
An honest Leafs fan will have told you after watching the final series of the NHL playoffs that he's glad the Leafs didn't make it - they would have embarassed themselves. The current calibre of play coming off the Leaf bench is not that of a Stanley Cup winning team - they lack speed and they lack depth in the blue-line. Ed Belfour was an astounding fixture of the Leaf line-up, making incredible stops time and time again when his sieve-like defencemen couldn't get the job done.

After yesterday's signings, it's apparent that the business-as-usual Leafs are willing to wait for another year to hoist the Cup. McCabe and Antropov are to remain in the blue and white. McCabe, who I will admit has a strong record on paper, is a player who has shown a total inability to raise his game in the clutch. When he's strong, he's strong, but when he's weak, he looses games. Nik Antropov... well let's hope he can get his head out of his ass this season.

I am of the strong belief that it is time to re-invent the Leaf blue line from top to bottom and there are no babies in the bathwater when it comes to the Leaf defenders. Perhaps Bryan Leech will provide the guidance and leadership that will motivate the younger players to actually start defending (Hello Tomas Kaberle). Perhaps defensive pairings from the current roster will develop that are beyond the demonstrated sum of their parts. Perhaps by some miracle all the aging Leaf players will have the seasons of the lives and the team will be a serious contender. There are a lots of "perhaps" in the Leaf future - the team looks more like a bond fund than it does a high performing company. I think the most likely result of these moves is that Toronto will remain a city of frustrated Cup ambitions.

American Politics; Canadian Rugger

On my morning commute I passed several thousand people waiting in line to attend the Bill Clinton book signing of "My Life". I don't know if Bill's book signing will be as privileged and partisan an event as the recent Cheney Rally in Albuquerque where it was required that attendees sign a letter of endorsement! Modern democracy at work! The endorsement form says: "I, (full name) ... do herby (sic) endorse George W. Bush for re-election of the United States." Yeehaw! Cheney criticized the Kerry-Edwards Campaign for "the failed thinking of
the past" - OHMYGOD, Cheney, if you're the thinking of the future I'll have to go back to the Middle Ages.

Last night we only managed five for rugby, but gave it a run nonetheless. Sprained finger aside, it was a good run - our side only moderately embarrassed ourselves. The topic of conversation over pints afterwards ran to the legalization of marijuana and the issues around policing stoners who decide to get behind the wheel. How will the government deal with the problem that there are no satisfactory tests to determine if someone is incapacitated behind the wheel? Additives?

Work is trudging along. I'm running a Document Assembly demo today and dreaming of working on a marketing plan. Tonight we're headed (slightly) north for dinner with the folks.

Liverpool wins in NY; Trade talks.

Benitez on the Win

LFC won yesterday in NY versus Roma. Seems they left their playbook in America as the team was able to return to a form not unlike that shown against Celtic last week. What's with Biscan? He's on fire!

Diouf to go to Spain? The Senegal striker still wants to talk with Benitez before he heads to another team. It seems very unlikely that he'll stay on at Anfield when the Club is shopping for more players. The Champions roster deadline is approaching, so LFC will likely be making at least one new signing within the week (and Diouf's paycheque will pay for them).

Is the Long Weekend Really Over?

It certainly doesn't feel like it. Or at least I'm certainly having a hard time getting back in gear!

Friday's Liverpool match didn't turn out to be the magnificent sporting event I had hoped for - the team struggled throughout the match trying to find their feet and in the end Porto got the goal they had been threatening to get for most of the match. All the same, it was great to see the team playing in Toronto and I think everyone involved in the match greatly enjoyed the experience. Perhaps I have even interested
Matthew and K in following the team.

US forces are on heightened alert today as the appears to be an al-Qaeda threat originating from (current ally?) Pakistan. Financial buildings are targeted in documents dating back to 2000. Tom Ridge has stated that he hopes that financial markets will rise to show terrorists that their threat is not felt - funny Tom, I thought the markets rose and fell with the economy and earnings. Link. I have two fears stemming for alarms of these sort - 1. Are they credible alarms or timed political tools? 2. Will failure to demonstrate a credible and immediate threat undermine the reporting process and endanger the initiative? As an aside, what are citizens to do in the event of higher security alert - it seems to me that the apart from being more anxious and less trusting of one's neighbours, we're only expected to be good little working consumers.

I watched two movies over the weekend. The first was "Outfoxed" the documentary about how Fox News constructs the headlines, sets the scope of American political discussion, is the partisan mouthpiece of the Republican party, manipulates and deceives the public and undermines the integrity of Western journalism. It's interesting stuff! Not set for release in the theatres as far as I'm aware, you can buy it online at Outfoxed.Org. O'Reilly is the DEVIL!

I also saw "I, Robot" which was predictable but very entertaining. Recommended for rental certainly provided you're not looking to become too philosophical.

Had a really nice hike on the weekend in the Rouge River Valley. I could get used to this. Thanks K.
