Social sites reveal class divide

A six-month research project has revealed a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites.

The research suggests those using Facebook come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college.

By contrast, MySpace users tend to get a job after finishing high school rather than continue their education.

Closer, Closer

Yikes! It's going to be a busy week this week as we get down to the day! The "big stuff" has been taken care of (I think) and now we're cleaning up the smaller details. The Plan remains to have the Stag on Thursday, Rehearsal and Dinner Friday and then the big shebang Saturday.

Aside from the wedding, I have many other items on the go with work and PCF both requiring a fair amount of effort. Also, I have a Dominion Institute function on Wednesday.

Moving web hosts

BenHarrison.com is moving!

I've now moved my website to 1&1 after many years with Dollarhost.

I was very happy with DollarHost's service, but the prices with 1&1 were just too good (I pay $5/m for 4 domains), especially as 1&1 has spam protection for my email accounts for which DollarHost was going to charge $5/m.

I think most elements have now been transitioned -- mail will be switched over at the end of the month and I have everything in place.

Wedding Stuff

A brief blog on the topic of the moment, the wedding. Still many things to do, but it seems it's coming together!!! Need to finalize a few details and pick up the rings. Hope I got all the meal selections right for the Rehearsal Dinner.

Rushdie's Knighthood disrespect for Islam?

More trouble for one of my favourite authors:

"The UK's envoy to Pakistan has expressed 'deep concern' over comments by a Pakistani minister about Sir Salman Rushdie's knighthood.

Religious Affairs Minister Mohammad Ejaz ul-Haq's comments were widely seen as justifying suicide attacks because Sir Salman had insulted Islam.

But High Commissioner Robert Brinkley said it was untrue that the knighthood was intended to insult Islam."

Vertical farming in the big Apple

I seem to recall building these structures in SimCity!

"Downtown Manhattan is hardly a place you would associate with agriculture. Rather, with its countless restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets this is a place of consumption.

And so every morsel, every bite of food New Yorkers munch through every day must be trucked, shipped or flown in, from across the country, and across the world.

Now though, scientists at Columbia University are proposing an alternative. Their vision of the future is one in which the skyline of New York and other cities include a new kind of skyscaper: the vertical farm."

An interesting way to get food closer to the consumer -- by 2050, nearly 80% of the world's population will be in urban centers.

"For God's Sake, Please Stop the Aid!"

Here's an interesting article! From DER SPIEGEL, an interview with African Economics Expert: "For God's Sake, Please Stop the Aid!" - Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem.

South Korean bank to help soldiers dumped because of military service

Good Grief. A South Korean bank is offering to help heartbroken soldiers dumped by girlfriends while away on mandatory military service by providing special interest rates for stilted troops.

Soldiers who can show letters or e-mail proving their break-up to a bank clerk can receive a new deposit plan with better rates and waived service fees, said Nonghyup Bank official Gil Yoon-Jung on Tuesday. The offer began Monday and runs through September.

Troops will get as much as a 0.3 percentage point premium a year for proving they are no longer romantically attached.

Writing on Monday

My attempts to be a good little blogger haven't been so successful of late -- here it is Monday again and nary a post in what proved to be a busy week.

First, the wedding stuff. We decided on our honeymoon location last week, have a flight and a booking in Hawaii. Need to touch base with the caterers still. On the weekend I made the deposit on the cigars. Things are coming together.

Had a busy PCF week with our regular meeting plus a dinner with a major new donor. Our new website is apparently in development.

Work wise I was just generally busy.
